I planted a lilac bush the other day in my backyard. I’ve always wanted one of my very own. Its spring and early summer blooms carry a fragrance that lifts the soul and stirs the senses. The blossoms are delicate and fragile—if you cut them, they seem to wilt much quicker than many other flowers. I know… I’ve tried.
I believe the lilac is a beautiful spring invitation from the Creator Himself.
An invitation to step outside into a world bursting with new life.
The birds are returning, their chorus no human choir can match. The daffodils, the tulips, the dogwood—and even the deep green of a spring lawn—are all beckoning us to come out, to step into creation… to step into life.
I’ve said it before: creation reveals the heart, the message, the character of its Creator.
Why do I believe so deeply in resurrection?
Because when I step outside my door, resurrection is happening all around me. It is literally bursting from the ground.
Here in the Northern Hemisphere, new life is coming forth every single day. In the plants, in the animals—everywhere you look—the Creator is extending an invitation: step into life… new life.
Even in His design for mankind, it all follows the rhythm of the seasons.
The children of Israel were delivered from Egypt in the spring. They crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land in the spring. The feasts of Passover and Unleavened Bread were given as reminders of these events—celebrated in the spring. Pentecost follows at the beginning of summer.
This is no accident.
This is design.
So during this Holy Week, my invitation to you is this:
Step into the classroom… the studio of the Creator’s works of wonder.
Step into a living, breathing display of what appeared dead just weeks ago, but is now alive and bursting forth.
Breathe in deeply the fragrance of resurrection life.
“But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”
—1 Corinthians 15:20–22 (ESV)
I hope you, too, will find your own lilac—your own invitation to new life this season.
I can almost smell it now…
